Biography : Pheadra
I have been performing with fire for over 10 years both solo and with various troupes around the world. I have always had a passion for adventure which that has brought great diversity and richness to my life. For me life is about grabbing the moment, speaking my truths and following my loves.
FlameOz is one of my great loves and an amazing adventure with the most awesome crew of people I have ever worked with.
Love, sweat, burns, tears and inexpressible highs.
Go for your dreams!
Biography : Dave
I was born in the UK and moved to Brisbane, Australia in 1992. The
same year I was taken to the Maleny (now Woodford) Folk Festival and
that's where I first saw firetwirling. I'd always had a little bit of
pyro in me and had never fully fulfilled childhood desires to be a
ninja, so it was a perfect combination...it's been a long and
obsessive love affair ever since!
Biography : Vanessa
I grew up in Melbourne, Australia, dancing to
Michael Jackson, Thriller and trying to pout like
Madonna. I spent years bouncing from dance class to
dance class, trying everything from traditional
classical Indian dance to Salsa grooves.
After completing a Bachelor Degree in Physiotherapy
1995 at Melbourne University I spent the next few
years working in Hospitals during the day and
performing in cabaret clubs at night with an African
dance troupe "Wild Moves".
In 2000 I moved to Byron to pursue a contemporary
dance course "Spirit in Motion" with Janis Claxton.
Discovering that I was more suited to the Byron
alternative lifestyle on the luscious East Coast, I
remained here working in different physiotherapy
private practices and sweating through many a dance
class.
Byron allowed my interest in dance and performance
to grow and led to various community shows including a
body percussion dance piece with Greg Sheehan as part
of the Rhythm Festival at the Woodford Folk Festival
2001.
During the Bellingen Festival 2002, I snatched a
glimpse of my first fire dancing show by the
FireFlies.
The culmination of fire and dance was truly inspiring.
Not long after returning to Byron I headed off to my
first fire dancing class with Phaedra. I'm not really
sure the chain of events after that as everything
accelerated so quickly that before I knew it we were
choreographing our first piece, the group expanded
to 5, we found ourselves a name and we were heading to
Europe to perform!
It has been an incredible journey learning from each
other not only skills but communication and working
as a team to create cutting edge fire performances.
Our troupe epitomises everything I am passionate
about: dance, music, choreography, costume design,
travel and above all: friendships
Biography : Dimitri
I was born in London and grew up on a slice of paradise in the caribbean called St. Thomas. My childhood consisted of fantasy novels, weekend adventures with my parents, backgammon, soccer, camping, comic books and chess.
I learned to juggle ages ago when a cousin gave me a set of instructions and three juggling balls. However, it wasn't until I graduated university and returned to London that a friend showed me a glimpse into the infinate number of combinations three balls could make and I was hooked! Lucky enough, I found a family of friends in London who also wanted to explore our relationship with gravity and together we played. Yipppee!
Since then my passion has become my profession. Over the years I've travelled the world and worked at a wide range of different events and projects from childrens party's, corporate events(Adobe(NL), Kleen-Easy(UK), Nissan(UK), etc), festivals(Glastonbury(UK), Linz(Au), SOMA(Ger), etc), Commercials(Samsung(Tai)), night clubs(The Brixton Academy(UK), The Fridge(UK), etc) and movies(Indian Baboo(UK)). I've collaborated and worked with many groups including Just Jugglers, Club-a-Dub, Fakir Bones Circus Weird, The Invisible Circus, Peachee Pangea and Trulee Rudee, The Clowns Collective, The Phoenix Fire tribe, Conan the Bubble Man, SpinPsycle and now my current performing group troupe FlameOz.
Biography : Gracie
I am Ablazing Grace, one link in the FlameOz family.
As a group we totally adore each other. This love
penetrates way beyond the boundaries of our show and
the inspiration this brings is evident in our
performances.
I first was drawn to the flame about four years ago,
about the same time I fell in love with wigs and whips
(wink wink). After travelling around Australia
busking and training for over a year I started
performing at Byron Bay's famous Arts Factory Lodge
working with The Pyromaniacs and then Mission
Ignition.
I've been teaching in and around Byron Bay for over a
year, including a seven week course I designed run
through the local Adult Community Education program.
FlameOz allows me to continually develop my creative
skills; costume design and creation, choreography and
equipment engineering, as well as my street
performance skills and circus training.
I personally will strive to continue practice and
training to maintain our professional standard,
keeping up-to-date with the ever-evolving world of
